The Help

For those that enjoyed the classic novel To Kill A Mockingbird, you will really enjoy this one. It doesn't have the girl being abused or the court case, but the segregation and treatment of African-Americans in the southern United States is what is comparable. The same anger, frustration and hurt I felt reading that book I also felt while reading this one.
For someone born in 1976, it's hard for me to fathom that people actually treated each other this way. I know it existed or even still exists, but for the life of me I will never understand why. Do you think a horse would guffaw at a zebra or be its friend, knowing they shared similarities? I like to believe in the latter, though more often that not it is not so. If I have learned anything, story or no story, people can and have been cruel.
So when will it stop?
These were questions I asked myself while reading The Help.
Now for particulars about the book....
I loved the characters! Aibileen, Minny, Skeeter and even Miss Celia. They were so well rounded that I felt like they were real women with real stories. Aibileen was a strong force throughout the whole story, but Skeeter was my favorite due to her courage to do what was right. Minny touched my heart in so many ways. I felt connected to her the most, since we were both abused women. My heart went out to her often.
I really didn't want the story to end. And now with the film out, it won't have to. This is a book that people will remember for a long time to come, and one I will make sure everyone I know hears about!

The Big 5-OH!

Olivia, Liv, Wallace faces her monumental birthday with more than her usual dread. It seems like she is fated to have a disaster occur on each and every one—from her boyfriend kissing another girl on her 16th birthday to a diagnosis of stage 3 ovarian cancer on her 48th birthday. Liv’s leave of absence from the hospital is almost used up and soon it’s almost time that Liv move on with her life and decide if she wants to return to her job as a surgical nurse or if she would like to try a new career challenge. Her best friend Hallie has just the ticket to cheer Liv up. Hallie’s mother, Josie, who lives in Florida and writes children’s books, would like a house sitter for 2 weeks so that she can come visit Hallie and her family. On the plane to Florida, Liv meets Jared Hunt but Liv is upset by turbulence and they do not converse much during the flight. However, by chance, Liv finds Jared’s house is next door to Hallie’s mothers. Jared and Liv share a strong Christian faith and their romance is refreshingly free of intimate details. Each chapter has a few lines of a children’s book, written by Josie, that parallel the chapter content.
I found this book to be quite refreshing. Rather than the customary chic lit, it is Christian based and all of the characters were well developed and believable. I hope this author writes more novels as they definitely are well worth reading and stand out from the crowd.

The Hypnotist

When I signed up for this book, I had no idea it was a third in a series.
That didn't matter, I fell right into the characters. I admit in the beginning it was different, flipping back and forth between the stories, but when it came together it was beautiful!
This book took forever to get to me, but it will stay with me forever.
I can only compare it to The Da Vinci Code, but honestly, I liked this one better.
Definitely one I'm adding to my recommendation list!
