Relationships are hard to maneuver. Deciding which relationships are worth “more” of your time than others, deciding where borders need to be, deciding when a relationship is not worth it anymore...sometimes maneuvering them is more like a mine field and most of the time I would rather deal with the field. At least the field will only change once and its because you stepped on the mine. (Love is a Battlefield, sorry couldn’t resist).
So, for those of us who are sometimes disappointed in “real” relationships, we escape to the world of books and movies in order to hold on to the hope that one day our Prince will hop on his ever-trusty steed and come to save us from our doomed existence of work, work, bills, work, bills, no sleep, work, bills...you get/know the picture. (Except in our modern age, its not a horse, its probably more like a Prius or a Spider, depending on your environmental tendencies...).
One of the problems for us that hold out hope for the man who is ever faithful, will never leave us and will always love us is. Lately, unless you revert to your High School days, you don’t have much in mass media. Being one who loves Vampires and Werewolves, its been kinda disappointing. How does one who has long passed her tween years find a book that depicts the strong, protective, sensitive Vampire/Werewolf settle on two spindly, not even old enough to drink kids as Princes? Well, some of us don’t and we search and just have found it...Mortal Illusions - Edward and Bella for adults.
Mortal Illusions catches you up in the world of Germaine and Claire, who in the midst of her mothers death and the production of Dracula, end up finding themselves falling in love, only to have to deal with her brother Robert's impending death. The lead characters are strong-willed and determined to protect each other, most of the time, from each other. You follow them through the twist and turns of a relationship that not only has to deal with the “regular” difficulties but one that is also has to navigate the world of the living and the dead. You find yourself at the end of a chapter not wanting to put the book down because you really want to know what happens next only to find yourself at the end of the next chapter needing to go on. You connect to the characters, understand their struggles and find yourself rooting for them.
Admittedly, I was made to vote for Vampire or Werewolf - friends, gotta love them. I jumped on the Werewolf bandwagon - after reading this, I just might change my vote.
